Matthew Travis created the fundraiser after his parent's home at 65 Adams St. was destroyed in a February 24 fire. The fire marshal estimated the damage to the house at $500,000. It's unclear what sparked the blaze, but officials say it started in the living room.
Thankfully, no one was hurt.
Matthew wrote that his father, Paul Travis, wasn't home, but his quick-thinking mother who was saved the family dog before she escaped the flames.
He added that losing his childhood home was devastating, but the outpouring of support has been overwhelming.
"We watched as the house we were raised in, and now a second home to our children, Beth and Paul’s 7 grandchildren, quickly engulfed in flames and burned down. The outreach over the last 24 hrs has been incredible and we feel so very loved and grateful to be part of such a supportive community. Many people have asked how they can help and we believe this emergency fund for immediate use on essential items like groceries, food and clothes, is the best way to support our parents during this challenging time."
The GoFundMe has raised nearly $30,000 after asking for $25,000.
